How a Recruiter Searches for QA Auto (and Slightly Loses Faith in Reality)

A story about how a recruiter searches for a QA Automation Engineer and why it's crucial for your profile to be readable in 5 seconds.

Authors: slavb18

Morning. Coffee. A task opens up.

  • "Need a QA Auto (Java), 3+ years of experience."
  • "Can I... who is this?"
  • "Check the brief, everything's written there."

The recruiter opens the brief. Closes the brief. Opens a chat with AI.

  • "Help me understand who this person even is and how to search for them."

The AI, like an older sibling, calmly replies:

  • "Here are your Boolean queries, keywords, synonyms, tech stack, roles, naming variations. Go forth and conquer."

The recruiter copies the query. Goes to search. Opens 10 tabs with the middle mouse button (ritual mandatory).

The mode begins: "guess the profession from the resume."

Tab 1: "Software enthusiast | QA | Explorer | Life-long learner"

  • "...understood, closed."

Tab 2: "Automation ninja | Selenium magician | CI/CD warrior"

  • "Sounds powerful, but where's Java? Closed."

Tab 3: Half in Russian, half in English, suddenly at the bottom: "Dungeon Master, Dungeons & Dragons"

  • "...interesting, but not today."

Tab 4: Just a list of technologies without context: Java, Python, JS, Go, Rust, Kubernetes, Photoshop, Excel

  • "Brother, who are you..."

And so it goes for 30 minutes. Eyes no longer search for meaning - they search for familiar words: "Java" → present? "Selenium" → present? "3+ years" → seems present?

  • "Well, that'll do, reached out."

At Some Point, Realization Strikes

A recruiter doesn't read a resume. They scan.

They have 5-7 seconds to understand: 👉 if you're the right fit or not

If during this time there's no "oh, this is it" moment - you're just closed tab #7 out of 10.

Now for the Truth of Life

If your profile is like Frankenstein's monster:

  • half in Russian
  • half in English
  • roles mixed up
  • tech stack scattered
  • and on top of that, "I love board games and travel"

Then the recruiter isn't thinking at that moment: "What an interesting person"

They're thinking: "I didn't understand if this is my candidate or not" → close

How to Avoid Being Closed

Just imagine you are a search result.

And within 5 seconds, it should be clear:

  • Who you are: QA Automation (Java)
  • How much: 3+ years
  • What with: Selenium / REST / CI/CD / JUnit
  • Where: (optional, but useful)

No quests. No riddles. No D&D (well, almost 😄).

Conclusion

A recruiter isn't the enemy. They're just a person with 50 tabs and a deadline.

Help them understand you quickly - and they'll help you find a job.

And if not - well... tab #11 is already opening 👀
